Subject-Verb Agreement Rule 14

The number takes a singular verb and a number takes a plural verb.

Examples:

A. The number of cars in the city is increasing so fast there is always a traffic congestion.
B. A number of applicants have come for an interview.

Note: The number ----> SV (Singular Verb), if , A number ----> PV (Plural Verb)

Exercise 14

1. A number of students (has, have) been expelled.
2. The number of homosexuals in the Philippines (is, are) increasing.
3. A number of scouts (has, have) arrived for training.
4. A number of sick people (arrives, arrive) in the convent for healing.
5. The number of population in our country (has, have) been increasing since then.
