Subject-Verb Agreement Rule 10

The verb agrees with the positive subject, not with the negative.

Examples:

A. Linda, not her sisters, is touring Europe.
B. I, not my friends, am getting the watches.

Note: In this case, one should neglect the negative subjects introduced by the word "not".

Exercise 10

1. The president, not the secretary, (meets, meet) an accident.
2. Her cousins, not my siblings, (destroys, destroy) the faucet.
3. She, not he, (cries, cry) heavily.
4. The groom, not the bride, (runs, run) away.
5. Her sister, not my cousin, (elopes, elope) with my boss.
